Nthato established a global profile as Spoek Mathambo, a pioneering musical voice in Pan African electronic music. He directed award-winning documentary, Mutant (2020) with an unflinching honesty, and connected audiences to the grit and beauty of local youth culture with the music documentary Future Sounds of Mzansi (2012). His afro-futurist short Surf Sangoma (2022) in the Disney animated series Kizazi Moto, scooped up an Annie Award for Best Animation Series. He is also a published author, releasing his debut novel Ghost in the Drum in 2024. Long form projects include international feature Burkinabe (2019) and A Scam Called Love (2025), South Africa’s first Amazon/MGM-backed feature, a romantic comedy that really honed his skill for comedic timing and performance.
